10 Tips On How To Market Yourself Or Business. This list by no means guarantees success and I’m sure you could add to it but I’ve found it’s a great starting point for anyone looking to brand themselves or grow a small business.
1. Keep It Real.
No matter what your industry or the market you are in or trying to target, be honest and transparent with your readers, viewers, followers and potential clients and/or partners. The public these days are a lot more educated and up to date than they were say 20, 10 or even 5 years ago so make sure you don’t Bullshit them. Did I just Bullshit? I did. And I say it with a passion. These days information is everywhere and good information can be found at the push of a button or two and we all know when someone is just outright lying and talking crap. We also know when someone has a hidden agenda and thus hides information or the truth just for their own personal gain. Do this and you will quickly get a bad reputation which will spread through your industry faster than wild fire so always be honest and transparent even if it means sometimes losing a customer and sending them somewhere else.
2. Be Consistent.
Make sure that whatever is it you are doing is consistent. If you are creating new products or services make sure they have similarities even if its consistently great quality or consistently great value and you’ll always have an endless supply of people wanting to buy from or join you.
3. Be Different.
It seems that everyone is trying to do the same thing these days. Step away of the heard, be different and dare to do something no one else is. This can truly set you up as a leader in your field. Offer something unique and memorable. I personally strive to be either original or at worst case improve upon something someone else has done in a not so great way and add to it. They say that all you have to do is improve something by 10% and you open up a totally new market for yourself. Don’t be afraid to get out there, be different and step out of your comfort zone.
4. Take A Chance.
Not everything works and Not everything you do will work. God knows I have failed more times that I have succeeded. I will also continue to fail more times that I have succeeded although it hurts to openly admit that! If you don’t try you will never know. You cant fail forever. Eventually you will get there but you must first take a chance on whatever it is you are doing. Sometimes it can be a small change that determines the difference between a success and failure. At the end of your life you will regret the things you DIDN’T do more than the ones you DID.
5. Give Your Clients What You Said You Would.
This is pretty self explanatory. There are many people and businesses out there that market products and services and sell them only to deliver something that was not on their sales copy. I know I’ve bought products that weren’t quite the way the person or company explained. That’s false marketing or what I call scam marketing. Anyone can create some hot selling sales page and then deliver a poor quality or poor performing product. Always underpromise your products and service but over deliver on the actual product or service.
Make sure it appears that your giving more than you have stated in your marketing materials. This also paves the way for some awesome testimonies which leads me on to tip 6.
6. Testimonies.
There is no better way to sell any product or service than by having a third party sell it for you where there is no financial or personal gain for doing so. Ever seen those infomercials late at night or exercise equipment on all those morning Tv shows? People freely give testimonials on products or services they have purchased, used and enjoyed the benefits of. This is powerful. It is one thing for you to sell yourself or your own product, but having others sell YOU or your products is much more easier and will result in achieving your desired outcome quicker. It also comes down to trust.
Having someone else speak highly of you builds credibility in you because it’s not you telling someone else how great you are, It’s someone else talking about how great YOU are. A great way to get testimonials from your customers is just ask!! You would be surprised what people will do if only you just ask them.
7. You Don’t Have To Get It Right, Just Get It Going.
Many individuals and companies wait until everything is perfect before releasing a product or service out into the market place. Do you know any perfectionists out there? These are the people who get few things finished because they never see anything as perfect and therefore it’s not finished and they wont release it into the market. I released my personal website and continue to market it and create content and I still haven’t created a logo with my personal photo in it.
Does this mean I hold off the site until I have done this? Of course not. I got it going before I got everything perfect. With time it will grow and improve which is a process. I have created other sites and released them way before the definition of perfect ever entered my mind. Just get it going. The market and your followers and clients will give you feedback to improve upon. If you have a project you are working on that is currently ‘sidelined’, get it out and release it and work on getting it right later.
8. Hang Out Where Your Industry Hangs Out.
Like attracts like and we all like to socialize and partner with people we feel are similar to us which includes having the same interests. Think about this. Look at your closest friends and you will notice that you are alike in many ways. Perhaps you like the same food, music, car, travel spots, clothing, interest, perhaps you are in the same industry. Hang out in places where your clients or potential clients hang out. This goes with advertising also. If you create computer products and your looking for places to sell them, try computer websites, forums and blogs. Computer magazines etc.
Social networking sites contain groups for almost any interest these days. Search out these groups and build relationships with people within them. Remember like attracts like.
9. Adapt To Change.
Industries, markets and economies constantly change sometimes on a daily basis. Accept that fact that there will always be new and better ways for doing things and achieving a specific goal. Being able to adapt to these changes will give you an advantage. There are many individuals and even organizations that like the ‘same old way of doing things’ and are perhaps to scared to change or try something new. The ones who stay in the past live in a world that no longer exists. Move with the times and reinvent yourself or organization if you have to and stay at the forefront of your industry. Try new tactics.
10. What’s Everyone Else Doing.
Follow experts and leaders in your field. Who are the famous ones? Who are the ones that everyone is talking about? Who is getting the results you are wanting to also get? Search for these people and when you find them stick to them and follow them. Learn what they are doing and what makes what they are doing so successful. Learn their tricks. I attended a Real Estate seminar some years ago and I remember one specific thing the speak said. He said. “Even if you have NO IDEA about investing in property, 1 safe way of doing it is this. Find where the big money is being spent IE where are shopping centres being built, hospitals, schools etc? Find these areas and put your small money next to the money of these huge establishments”.
I always remembered that. So if you find the biggest or best person or company in your field, follow their footsteps and do what they do but on a smaller scale or go bigger if you have the resources. This is a safe bet if you want to totally ignore my previous 9 points I have outlined above!!
If you have any other thoughts to add to this list, please include them in the comments section below. I’m sure everyone will appreciate it.
